US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s announcement on 12 February, made to NATO colleagues in Brussels, that1. it is not realistic for Ukraine to regain its 2014 borders,2. the US opposes NATO membership for Ukraine,3. the US will not send troops to Ukraine and4. if European troops are sent, they will not be protected by Article 5 of NATOis a comprehensive torpedoing of the whole of US-EU policy on Ukraine since 2008. NATO is now both politically and militarily dead, having been defeated on the very battlefield where it has said since 2022 it had to win. FVD has long opposed the war: only a few days before Hegseth’s remarks, FVD’s Ralf Dekker accurately predicted this outcome. He said that Europe needs a radical rethink of its security policy – a clear anticipation of the Americans’ decision to leave Europe in the lurch. Unfortunately there is little sign that Europe is preparing to revise its copybook. FVD MP Gideon van Meijeren has recently led the charge against a new law which will give the Dutch government the power to close down organisations which undertake ‘activities aimed at undermining, or threatening to undermine, the democratic rule of law or public authority’. But surely undermining public authority is what happens all the time when that authority is criticised, as it surely should be in a free democracy. Unfortunately lawfare is already being deployed against political opponents – all of FVD’s members of parliament have been the victims of judicial harassment, and worse, for their legitimate political activities. In&nbsp;an interview Sarah Knafo MEP gave to C News, following the brutal murder of an 11-year old French girl in a Paris suburb, she quoted the famous French political scientist, Jean-François Revel, who said that a political regime should be judged by the number of its dead bodies.&nbsp; For this, she was accused of ‘demagoguery’ by a prominent left-wing television personality, Jean-Michel Aphatie.&nbsp; FVD International is honoured to publish an English translation of her reply.&nbsp;Dear Mr Aphatie,You have attacked me on Twitter in a manner which leaves no doubt about your aggressive intent. This is typical of your style as a fashionable society agitator.&nbsp; Allow me to respond to you in a more structured way.&nbsp;&nbsp;Let us start with the remark by Jean-François Revel, which I quoted with reference to the murders of Louise, Lola, Thomas and Philippine.&nbsp; He said, “To judge a regime, count the number of bodies”.&nbsp; According to you, I have not understood Revel correctly or, worse, I am twisting his words.&nbsp;&nbsp;What does Revel say in his two major works,&nbsp;The Totalitarian Temptation and&nbsp;How Democracies End?&nbsp; He says that there is no closed border separating freedom from tyranny.&nbsp; If we are not careful, democratic regimes can at any moment tip over into dictatorship or civil war.&nbsp; Once this happens, it is very difficult to go back.&nbsp; It is therefore essential to be prudent and vigilant.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jean-François Revel never assumed democracy to be eternal.&nbsp; He was concerned for its future and warned us against what might happen.&nbsp; That is why he proposed a very precise means for measuring regimes: the number of dead bodies, which never deceives.&nbsp; Of course, the mass graves of totalitarian regimes are full of innocent victims, tens of millions of them, while the coffins I am speaking about - those of these French people murdered in broad daylight because our judicial and criminal law system has collapsed under the weight of immigration, delinquency and terrorism - are fewer in number.&nbsp; But the small numbers are getting bigger all the time.&nbsp; Knifings are no longer exceptional and have instead become a terrible normality.&nbsp;&nbsp;Every family which suffers such a murder is broken forever.&nbsp; A murder is a murder: no tragedy can be ‘put into perspective’ without adding insult to injury.&nbsp; We do have the right to count the number of victims of this barbarism.&nbsp; We must do so.&nbsp; It is not a matter of opinion but of duty. To count the number of dead in France today is neither a whim nor a luxury. The French people as a whole is counting them.&nbsp; They see the names of these young people who have been battered, strangled and stabbed to death, simply because they are French and peaceful, which makes them living targets.&nbsp;&nbsp;Yesterday, as you were posting your mini screed against me, parents all over the country were worrying about how to protect their children on the way to school.&nbsp; They are afraid.&nbsp; Do not think they are extremists.&nbsp; They are from the Left as much as from the Right.&nbsp; Fear, when it is visceral and legitimate, does not belong to one or other political camp.&nbsp; Whether you like it or not, these people are indeed using Revel’s method: they are counting the dead bodies and they are right to do so.&nbsp; They have the courage to be clear-minded.&nbsp; You have the cowardice to insult them.&nbsp;&nbsp;If Jean-François Revel had seen the way France is now, he would be appalled.&nbsp; He would definitely not have adopted the same attitude as you do.&nbsp; See for yourself:&nbsp; in 1997 he wrote in Le Figaro: “Any measure taken today by a state to contain, limit or regulate immigration is denounced as fascist.&nbsp; This is sheer political fantasy: no country in the world allows people to come to a country just because they want to.”&nbsp;&nbsp;Revel’s words allow us to imagine that if he were with us today, he would denounce the current state of affairs in the same way as he denounced evil everywhere: with his gloves off.&nbsp; Maybe he would even point the finger at you.&nbsp; Aphatie, you smirk every day on television.&nbsp; You live in the fantasy world Revel hated.&nbsp; That world is comfortable and you find it amusing.&nbsp; But ordinary people are not allowed in.&nbsp; Ordinary people are trapped in a reality which is becoming ever more cruel.&nbsp; While you get applause for your appearances on television, ordinary people are in tears.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now, Jean-Michel Aphatie, before concluding, let us discuss my honour which you are trying to besmirch.&nbsp; You have accused me of ‘surfing on misfortune’.&nbsp; With this painful and banal metaphor you at least accept that there is a wave.&nbsp; But I am definitely not surfing on it, quite the contrary.&nbsp; I am doing what I can to hold it back.&nbsp; I show how this can be done.&nbsp; The means are simple, I explain them and I call for them to be applied without delay.&nbsp; It is not a game, it is my duty as a French woman.&nbsp; Do not think for a moment that Tweets like yours will prevent me from accomplishing what I need to do.&nbsp; There would have to be something much stronger than you to stop me.You conclude by accusing me of ‘pure demagoguery’.&nbsp; I would be interested to know whether you would look into the eyes of the French parents I am talking about and say the same thing to the millions of them who live in fear and who are crying for help.&nbsp; Would you dare say to them that they are surfing on their own anguish?&nbsp; That their need to be reassured is demagogic?&nbsp; That there is something bad about their ‘feeling of insecurity’ and that they should seek refuge in the blindness of the media?&nbsp; I think you would have a hard time reassuring anyone, let alone them.&nbsp; They know you.&nbsp; They consider you to be an enemy of the truth.&nbsp; They just zap you.Yours sincerely,Sarah Knafo MEP.

The Totalitarian Temptation: how Democracies End

By Forum for Democracy, 5 February 2025On 4 February, the Lower House of the Dutch Parliament debated the proposed Social Organisation Transparency Act (WTMO), put forward by former minister and current chairman of the VVD liberal party, Dilan Yeşilgöz. This law would give the government unprecedented power to wring the neck of unwanted civil society organisations. Lectures, magazines and newsletters could be banned, donations stopped, bank accounts frozen.&nbsp; In short: the bill proposes the infrastructure to silence critical voices.&nbsp; &nbsp;Unclear grounds: a licence for arbitrarinessMember of Parliament Bente Becker (VVD) tried to play down the law during the debate, claiming it would be used ‘as little as possible’. But why then does the government give itself such far-reaching powers? The answer is simple: laws are always interpreted more broadly than proposed beforehand. What is sold as a measure against extremists today can be used against any critical movement tomorrow.The proposal states that the government may intervene in ‘activities aimed at undermining, or threatening to undermine, the democratic rule of law or public authority’.&nbsp; But nowhere does the law specify exactly what this means; it is a highly subjective criterion that is open to political interpretation and can very easily be misused against certain opposition groups.&nbsp;This makes this law even more dangerous, especially since the Dutch intelligence service AIVD has already said that ‘spreading the message that you cannot trust the government and other democratic institutions’ is an ‘undermining activity’ in its 2022 annual report. In line with this, even Forum for Democracy's systemic criticism has been labelled ‘anti-institutional extremism’ by the intelligence services (which operate under the control of the government).&nbsp;Judiciary as a political weapon &nbsp;We increasingly see the judiciary being used to silence government critics. &nbsp;<ul><li>Last week, it was announced that the public prosecutor's office launched a criminal investigation into Ongehoord Nederland, the only truly critical broadcaster, because of a job advert in which the broadcaster refused to acknowledge that there are more than two ‘genders’.</li><li>Thierry Baudet has been convicted for raising the issue of far-reaching fundamental rights restrictions during the Covid pandemic.</li><li>Pepijn van Houwelingen has been condemned for posting a meme on Twitter warning against the totalitarian nature of the SDG agenda.</li><li>Gideon van Meijeren is being prosecuted for calling for peaceful resistance to the government because it ‘might lead people to believe that violence would be permissible.’ .&nbsp;</li></ul>If this law is passed, government-critical organisations could soon be drained and gagged with the greatest of ease. Forum for Democracy remains firmly committed to freedom of expression, even if those opinions can be abrasive or hurtful.&nbsp;The WTMO is just one example of how our freedoms are being eroded. The Wtmo: An Open Attack on Opposition and Free Speech

There are two varieties of pessimism. Radical pessimism: this is simply called pessimism. And sober pessimism. This is called realism.Facing this in all severity, the question arises whether it is possible to fundamentally subscribe to pessimism and still embrace life from that position. Is it possible to be a consistent pessimist and at the same time strive for art and beauty, creativity and creation? That is what we are dealing with here – in this treatise on the ‘death of God’.The decomposing corpse of GodGod coincides with everything we find in the universe. He is the perfect unity, the perfect confluence. God was a universal bundle point containing peace, harmony, perfection – the totality of all. But God decided to end that perfection, to scale down, to divide himself into fragments. And in time, that perfect unity, that perfect sphere, drifted apart into looser galaxies and lonely atoms in a tenuous universe.Why exactly God did this, we do not know. We note that God valued ‘non-being’ higher than ‘being’. From His perfection – inherent to Him by virtue of the definition of ‘what God is’, He could not simply eliminate Himself. He had to work around it. lThis makes God’s dying process, similar to an AI that is fed up with its task: the AI cannot simply shed that task. However, the AI can corrupt its own code so that the task becomes unworkable over time. In a similar way, God set in motion His own dissolution process. This causes individuation – objects and beings existing on their own, no longer coalescing into that overarching unity.Primal longing and lurid insightSometimes humans have that same desire – to give up the boundary between our ‘self’ and ‘the other’. To merge into a greater whole, to become one, to become whole again, to come home to that primordial pool of light and harmony. That primal longing refers to that sphere that once coincided with God’s existence. It is a primal memory of a state that will never return: After all, God has dissolved himself.Contemplating this lurid insight – in which the universe thus exists as loose atoms from the corpse of a decomposing God – means you are staring directly into the devil’s eye. You are peering into the most bottomless pit to be found in the universe. Is it possible to ignite a flame of truth there? And&nbsp;if that is possible, does it make sense? Dancing on the edge of the abyss: facing the bleakest, darkest forces that harbour existence and non-existence. And to somehow remain unfazed by that?Emotional disruptionBecause that, in fact, is what&nbsp;arch-pessimism is about. Contemplating the existence and non-existence of God. And to face the fact that what once offered an illusion of grip and wholeness is shattering senselessly as we watch our loved ones – like ourselves – deteriorate. We grow older and all the warm safe havens of our youth, disappear in the fog of history. What is left of nostalgia crumbles in the chaos of remakes that manage to touch less and less the essence of what once offered fulfilment.And so is it possible – that is our question – to engage in genuine philosophical discussions with this arch-pessimism and not be dislocated by it on an emotional level? To still be able to experience joy and happiness in everyday life... Meanwhile recognising on a philosophical level the truth of this pessimism.Struggle for humanityFrom these considerations, the insight bubbles up that a ‘battle work for humanity’ is being performed by standing right in front of that most dark eye of Satan. That battle work is performed by facing the very darkest night on your own and weighing the arguments of the most existential nihilism with the power of one’s own mind.Many people prefer not to think about this – I can understand that. The empirical arguments of why everything is going to shit, are already sufficiently compelling. I have come to value that existential dark mythology, that metaphysics of tearing apart, more strongly in my life, precisely because the empirical data conforms to it entirely. So don’t come up with arguments of Jesus’ resurrection and going to church and “miracles” and so on.&nbsp;Go ahead and pray for the regrowth of a severed hand – should we ever see that happen, I will reconsider.For in that case, we would literally see the metaphysics of tearing apart being overcome as disintegrating atoms, reassemble into a reborn form. But considering we all know better, it is more honest and sensible to file those&nbsp;<a href="https://dr-sid-consultancy.email-provider.eu/web/o57jujw9b1/d2dg8njyyz">hopium mythologies</a> under the heading of ‘fairy tales for children’.Case studyWe find an example of this empirical decay in how people deal with risk. A significant proportion of women who have ventured into cryptocurrencies have sold their crypto in the bear market. Compared to men, women are, on average, risk-averse. You see this reflected at Bitcoin meetings where many expats gather. The men are the ‘early adopters’ and the women present are their girlfriends, mistresses and concubines.Acquiring financial resources from ‘high risk, high reward’ strategies feeds the woman’s natural tendency to abandon the man or become more distant with him when things get tough. This is because then the ‘<a href="https://fvdinternational.com/article/stories-of-a-wanderer-true-love">provider</a>’ vibes are not stimulated. But once the investment proves successful, women suddenly flock to these successful men.Winner takes allThis leads to a highly polarised ‘winner takes all’ dynamic between the sexes. Men no longer want to contribute to the collective: as they watch a few ‘alpha males’ run off with all the females. Those alpha males no longer want to commit to a partner because there are always new women in the queue. Women get ‘ruined’ by their contact with ‘alpha males’ because life with a ‘beta male’ does not offer the same sense of status, thrill and adventure. Even if they are forced into a monogamous relationship afterwards, this ‘alpha widow’ effect will continue to gnaw at them during the relationship with a beta male.Traditional societies have managed to cope with these dynamics – which are very deeply embedded in human nature – with strong social control within relatively small and orderly communities, coupled with social taboos on divorce and infidelity. Moreover, it was possible for men to take up roles as breadwinners, which was encouraged both economically and socially. The socio-economic infrastructure was designed to allow men to lead productive and responsible lives and to empower women in their feminine power.Total destructionToday, all this has been destroyed and made impossible by a thousand and one factors. Among them are feminism, blurring of norms through the massive importation of non-compatible cultures, rising fixed costs, housing becoming unaffordable, quotas on how many women have to work, the introduction of flex contracts, making breadwinning fiscally impossible, and so on.And after this, there are the arguments as to why things cannot all change tomorrow, even if right-wing conservatives were to suddenly gain power. The fact is that the younger generation has been ruined by the poor quality of education and even worse conditions for development during corona. Besides, we realist souls grew up under a progressive hegemony. This has helped fold our work ethic into a reality of part-time jobs and a maze of allowances. Such is not easy to reverse, even if the will to do so is there.The dead GodSo hence this cosmology of the God who has died, the self-dismantling God, appeals so strongly. The fragmentation described by the myth of the dismantled God is the fragmentation we experience from day to day. Hence the reference to the dissipation of nostalgia. When you are a child, or an adolescent, you feel the warmth of home, of family life. There is a sense of wholeness there to which you can always return. But when you get older you notice: everything dissipates and blows apart. There is no ‘great convergence’ waiting for us: things don’t come together.Just as I used to have a large and close-knit family, where everyone came to all the parties, that feeling too, has disappeared in recent years – especially since corona. And in terms of career, it’s the same. You write a dissertation, get to teach a few courses. You think you are investing in your CV. But in reality, they are just taking advantage of your cheap labour and in the wings your replacement has already been warmed up. As you get older, the practice of the life you lead drifts away from any imaginings you once had. Thoughts of a successful ‘career’ and an orderly ‘house-hugging’ disappear from view.The end of the bourgeois virtue bubbleAnd that is maybe for the best, since all the people who are on that bourgeois path are going to absorb another&nbsp;<a href="https://fvdinternational.com/article/the-economic-collapse-of-the-netherlands-is-coming-bringing-more-totalitarianism">big shock</a> with the progressive de-industrialisation of Europe, energy poverty, the evaporation of pension funds and, last but not least, the fiat apocalypse. And oh yes, another thing with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyccB_-2wvQ">demographics, immigration and Islam</a>.So – in the middle of the night you wake up in a South American country. You are sitting on a plastic chair at a fairground and opposite you are two Latinas. You try to remember which of them was your ‘date’ for the evening. Around you, you hear a cacophony of blaring mobile phones, booming speakers and ringing slot machines. You wonder if the duo will take you home or if you will be robbed – both options seem very possible. Which turn has life taken for you? One day in the distant past, the future seemed so promising.…You realise you are a floating atom in the decomposing corpse of God.Sporadic but sometimes fineWe experience life in fragments, detached fragments from the corpse of God, which we sporadically string together through the practice of an atomistic art of living. The atoms drift further apart and we have to make bigger and bigger jumps to simulate some kind of wholeness and convergence... Exactly like the atoms in our universe: drifting further and further apart with more and more ‘not’ between the ‘some’.This then leads to the question of whether creating an article like this – or publishing a book – is still an act of hope, a statement against the tearing apart and fragmentation. As long as you are still creating, as long as you are still active within the practice of art, can you really be consistently pessimistic? And that leads to the question, what then is the&nbsp;deeper truth behind this insistence on always being productive?Consistent pessimismYou work out your thoughts anyway, ready to publish them. Then you hope – or somewhere in the background there is a kind of intuition – that putting those thoughts and analyses into the world will make things change. That things will improve or at least make more progress. Which then never actually happens. So why do you keep feeding that productive drive? Why aren’t you consistent in your pessimism? Shroud yourself in silence!There will be a good reason for this, which coincides with my conclusions in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NASBg3Mj7cA">House of the Muse</a>. Indeed, you can conceive of life as a monolithic whole – a story with a beginning and an end, of a hero solving a problem. As in&nbsp;Lord of the Rings. But you can also think of life as a collection of short stories, each of which has meaning and value in its own right. Even if they do not coincide, and are quite different in nature and content.ConclusionSo that is exactly what is happening.&nbsp;Now we see it: God has pressed the exit button, dismantled himself into smaller parts that are drifting further and further apart – fragmented into oblivion. The universe around us is the decomposing corpse of God. And on some of those clumps some light can still be found, temporarily. We jump from clump to clump, telling a short story each time.We warm ourselves on the last afterglowing coals of a dying, shattered universe. So even if you don’t find a connecting, healing relationship, one that gives all the suffering a place and puts all the pieces of the puzzle together – a bit like the relationship between the naive child and his parents, reflects the relationship between the exalted believer and his supreme being. In a moment, sometimes longer, sometimes very brief, you can still experience happiness and pleasure. If you find it, don’t spurn it. The End of the Civic Virtue Bubble and the Death of God

Speech by Ralf Dekker to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Second Chamber of the Netherlands Parliament.5 February 2025NATO is going to lose the war in Ukraine to Russia. The war is actually already lost but there are still Ukrainian boys and girls left, especially now that the age for conscription is being lowered to 18. Fighting on until the last Ukrainian, it seems. Estimates vary, but it seems some 100,000 Russian soldiers have died. On the Ukrainian side it is considerably more, perhaps ten times as many. At least that is what independent observers say, such as Alexander Mercouris, Daniel Davis, Douglas MacGregor, Brian Berletic, Scott Ritter, Jacques Baud, who rely on various Ukrainian and Russian sources.There are also still Western weapons but most of them have been shot to pieces or sold. Corruption and desertion in the Ukrainian army is huge. Zelensky says only 40 per cent of the promised billions have been received. Some $100 billion is gone. It has disappeared into various deep pockets.Reports from independent Ukrainian media are different. Those are much more positive and optimistic. But as it now turns out, those media were 100% funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). So Ukrainian press releases and reports are completely dictated by Washington and the CIA.NATO's secretary general has found that Russia's war production capacity is significantly larger than thought. By Mr Rutte's estimate, Russia produces 3 to 4 times as many weapons and munitions as the entire West combined.Moreover, Russia has weapons systems against which the West has no defence at all, such as the hypersonic Oreshnik and the latest types of Iskander missiles. Western systems such as the ATACMs, Scallops and Stormshadows have not been able to do much so far.Across the front line, Russia is advancing. Nowhere are serious counterattacks by Ukraine any more. This is a war of attrition, not a war of conquest. So the exact location of the front line does not say much. The Ukrainian army - or rather NATO - is on the verge of total collapse. According to Budanov, the head of Ukraine's intelligence service, this will take a maximum of six months. Then Ukraine will cease to exist.And now the United States is threatening to withdraw from NATO in whole or in part - or at least from this Ukraine conflict. Then we had better quit altogether. Without the US, there can be no NATO, says even Mark Rutte.NATO is especially good as a story factory. Fantasia-land. The house of horrors. Zelensky as superhero. We must prepare for war, they tell us, and that Ukraine is the victim of a completely unprovoked attack by Russia. They say that if given the chance, the Russians will carry on all the way through to the English Channel. Russia is said to have blown up its own Nordstream gas pipeline. Russia is aided by secretive armies of North Koreans - who were never found and who now apparently have left because of huge losses. According to Zelensky, the faces of these North Koreans were burned by the Russians when they died, to avoid recognition, and that that is why they were not found.&nbsp; This is a ridiculous urban legend.It is high time for the Netherlands to rethink its security situation fundamentally. Is there really an enemy? Against what should we defend ourselves? Against Russia? North Korea? The United States? Our neighbouring countries? Against Brussels perhaps? Do we need to spend tens of billions more on that every year?&nbsp;Chairman, it really is time to say goodbye to this NATO. It is becoming embarrassing. Especially now that it has also emerged that, as part of ‘resilience’, our government receives instructions from NATO in all sorts of policy areas that evade parliamentary scrutiny. Perhaps these include instructions on the use of emergency kits and transistor radios. And on dealing with North Koreans. Perhaps the minister can give a hint on this.Thank you.

NATO is going to Lose the War in Ukraine

Faced with Trump, Europe is doubling down. This is true not just of geopolitics – France announced the delivery of Mirage fighters to Ukraine, just as Trump opened his peace initiatives with Russia – but also on social issues like abortion. The new US Vice-President’s first public speech after his inauguration was to the annual anti-abortion ‘March for Life’, which Trump also addressed again this year.By contrast, in the Dutch Parliament, at the same time, Gideon van Meijeren was prevented from making a speech about second trimester abortion, which is widely practised in the Netherlands (the legal term is 24 weeks) after he showed a plastic model of a 22-week-old foetus to the Committee. The livestream was shut down and the Chairman forbade him from continuing his speech. Gideon left the room and made a video of his speech instead. In it, he shows how late-term abortions are performed using a sopher clamp, a long grasping instrument with sharp teeth which is used to tear the foetus apart, limb by limb, and then to crush its skull. This is what Dutch parliamentarians refused to see or allow to be seen. Speech by Ralf Dekker MP in the Second Chamber of the Netherlands’ Estates-General, 29 January 2025Chairman,The Trump revolution has begun. Executive orders and statements are raining down from the president which run counter to previous US policy directions. Yet I still feel that Trump is holding back because a few crucial appointments to his administration, notably those of Robert Kennedy Jr and Tulsi Gabbard, have yet to be ratified by the US Congress.Already a few things stand out.Trump prefers to speak directly to heads of government rather than to unelected representatives of the Brussels bureaucracy.Trump is ambivalent about NATO, he understands that NATO expansion to the Russian border is perceived as a threat by Putin. He also thinks Europe should organise and pay for its own security much more than it does now.Trump wants to hold direct talks with Putin to end the Ukraine war, without the presence of European representatives.Trump admits that the blowing up of the Nordstream pipeline, partly a Dutch infrastructure, occurred under America's direction.Trump also thinks – according to Musk's word - that Germany should re-establish itself and he has sympathy for the AfD and its plans.&nbsp;Trump wants to say goodbye to the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion phenomenon. He has repealed Lyndon Johnson's 1965 executive order on Affirmative Action. This policy is already being followed by major companies including Amazon.Trump has withdrawn the United States from the World Health Organisation and the Paris Climate Agreement. Trump thinks windmills and solar fields should disappear, he thinks climate change is a hoax and he wants more drilling for oil and gas so that America becomes completely independent of other countries for energy.Trump also wants to bring Greenland and the Panama Canal under full US control as soon as possibleChairman, it is no exaggeration to call this a revolution.For most European countries, for the EU and for NATO, this comes as a huge shock. Until recently, the EU was a direct extension of the US, especially where foreign policy was concerned, aimed at weakening Russia to the maximum. The Netherlands enthusiastically helped in this.&nbsp;And in various other policy areas, such as healthcare, energy transition and infrastructure, we were also guided by the EU and NATO, which in turn were extensions of the US government's vision.&nbsp;A question for the prime minister: how far does this actually go? In which policy areas are there compelling secret Navo instructions? Are not the possibilities for oversight being taken out of the Chamber's hands here?Let's face it. European countries were vassal states of the United States for years.&nbsp;The people of the US wanted sweeping real change and therefore chose Trump en masse. A completely different America. America First.EU and NATO seem to have become Loser environments.Our old anchor point has thus ceased to exist. We will have to set our own direction as a country. Does the prime minister agree with Forum for Democracy?Thus, the resurgence of big brother and loyal trading partner Germany is vital for the Netherlands.&nbsp;Continuing the old direction without America, as suggested by Ms Kallas on Ukraine, among others, is illogical. This direction was already never in the Dutch interest, but without full American support it is suicide.&nbsp;If it did that, Europe would end up with the ‘worst of both worlds’: disrupted relations with both Russia and America, unaffordable defence in an EU with open borders, and with a prohibitively expensive insecure energy supply.&nbsp;If the EU wants to go that way with NATO, a Nexit and a departure from NATO are urgent.&nbsp;National sovereignty is the only answer.Thank you

The Worst of Both Worlds

No one denies that China has great influence on the world economy. However, after the Covid pandemic and the Russo-Ukraine conflict, many people including scholars and experts have started to question the continued growth of China’s economic power. After Donald Trump’s election, nearly every nation thinks that economic tension with the United States will lead to hard times for the Chinese people. Mainstream comments focus on the economic aspects but I am going to analyse this issue from the perspectives of geopolitics and stratagem.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Era of MultipolarityThe cold war is over but chaos will continue. The Ukraine and the Middle East conflicts have accelerated the emergence of multipolarity. The world has entered into a new era of warring states. There is an increasing tendency for every nation to safeguard its own interests and influence. Alliances are becoming transient and pragmatic. Division and divergence appear frequently, even in traditional blocs such as NATO and the EU. Trump’s return to the White House will aggravate the situation.One geostrategic challenge to China’s coming growth would be a US-led alliance or new containment policy towards China. However, the effectiveness and coherence of such a strategy will be seriously affected by the rise of multipolarity. The nations of the West tend to adopt ad hoc and short-term positions for safeguarding their interests. We may learn a lesson from the Period of Warring States in Ancient China (472-221 BC). During this period, all the noble states entered the chaotic game of alliance and division. Ideology, loyalty and even kinship were irrelevant for statecraft and diplomacy. Certainly, this applies to other nations including China. As the whole situation has become complex and unpredictable, which side can take advantage in this new geopolitical jungle will depends on opportunities, crisis, resources - and skill.Many people including mainstream scholars take the view that multipolarity is just about an increase of number of nations which struggle for pure and raw power.&nbsp; This is the sort of vision embraced by realists such as John Mearsheimer.&nbsp; But they neglect an important but hidden trend - the influence of civilisation and/or culture. When more nations and powers break away from the cage of ideology and hegemony, the “spirt” or “inwardness” of nations will be replaced by traditions and civilisations. Similar arguments were made by the late Samuel Huntington but he emphasised the clash aspects. When Deng Xiao Ping became the leader of China, he rarely talked about the Chinese classics in public. The current Chinese President, Xi, is different. He always quotes Chinese classics in public arena. Many people think that the Communist Party of China has replaced Chinese tradition with Marxist doctrines. This is totally incorrect. Different civilizations or sub-civilisations play a decisive role in geopolitics. Western civilisation, in particular, American sub-civilisation, engage with other civilisations in competition with China. The more a civilisation fosters collaboration, the more it enhances political exchange and economic growth. Americans emphasise creativity while China advocates harmony. How political leaders recognise and take advantage of their own civilisations will be important benchmarks for geoeconomic performance in the coming future.One Belt One RoadChina is a socialist nation, and so planning is still practiced even after the opening policy of the 1980s. The One Belt One Road Initiative (BRI) is a long-term plan and grand strategy, necessary for survival as the domestic market in China has become saturated. The BRI has geopolitical significance. The focus of BRI is the opening of China westwards to the Eurasian continent. To the North is Russia while Japan in the East. China still has disputes with some nations of the South East Asia. India remains a strong competitor with a territorial dispute. If China wants to expand geoeconomic engagement, turning westwards to the Eurasia is a viable option.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;BRI has been implemented for more than 10 years. Certainly there are many challenges ahead.&nbsp; But this grand strategy has paved a foundation for continuing economic opportunities. Geopolitically, Russia at initial period was not very keen on BRI and worried that China would intrude into its sphere of influence in Eurasia including Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. However, the Ukraine conflict has caused Moscow to move closer to BRI in order to counter the economic offensive from the West. It does not mean that there will be no competition for influence between China and Russia in the region. If the two giants can overcome their differences, the United States will need to make more diplomatic efforts to break into the BRI shield.&nbsp;Another related issue is energy supply. In order to sustain the BRI, a stable energy supply is essential. For a long time, petroleum from the Middle East, in particular those nations under American interests, has the main source of energy. In recent years, China has taken proactive steps for reducing energy risk by purchasing petroleum or natural gas from different nations such as Iran, Russia, etc. If the BRI energy supply line is not disturbed, steady economic growth can be guaranteed. That partly explains why China has been keen to be a mediator in international disputes. Conflict and instability in nations related to production and transport of oil and gas certainly lead to adverse costs on progress of BRI. I think China will continue to use diplomacy and other means to maintain the energy supply.American Response&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The only nation that can resist China’s continued growth is the United States. Trump’s tactics and motives are unpredictable.&nbsp; But we can still guess his mindset and tendency. The new President wants to realise his dream of Grand American Empire, devoid of ideology and principle. Bilateral action is preferred to multilateral institutions. Personal friendship overrides national alliance. Trump wants to beat down China economically - but everything is negotiable. He likes to put a horrible price first and then to bargain smartly. Unlike BRI, Trump’s vision of new Empire is centralised and dominated by the United States. Furthermore, he is concerned only with economic gain in Europe, while the politics of the continent is none of his business. Hence, Trump will use economic statecraft unilaterally against China with little co-ordination with allies. As he will not run for the next election, short term results will be favoured.In Sino-American relations, two geopolitical issues are worth mentioning. The first one is Taiwan. Trump will not change the basic Taiwan Policy, that is maintaining the status quo. However, the White House will concede in some areas if Beijing can give economic benefits in return. In other words, the United States may from time to time to use Taiwan as a pawn to blackmail China. For China, total conflict with Taiwan is costly and it will prejudice the progress of BRI. On balance, it is wise to avoid total conflict by yielding some economic demands from Trump. Further, it is up to Beijing leadership to play smart games at the negotiation table. The Taiwan issue will not greatly affect China’s economic growth.The second geopolitical issue related to American response is North Korea. Many think Trump will normalise the relations with Kim Jong-Un step by step.&nbsp; The timing is good as South Korea is now in chaos. However, it may not be so simple. As Kim has now formed an alliance with Putin, any normalisation with Trump needs Russia’s support. If Putin has not settled the Ukraine conflict with Trump, will this hinder any reproachment between Washington and Pyongyang? Further, if Trump exerts financial pressure on Japan and South Korea for defence expenses, will these two countries turn to China? China’s aid to North Korea is negligible and any reduction will not affect economic growth much. The stability of North East Asia on the other hand may contribute positively to China economic relationship with Japan and South Korea.&nbsp;Chinese StratagemIn recently years, some scholars have studied the strategic culture of China with reference to Chinese classics such as Sun Tzu’s Art of War. I can say that their research is limited in scope, with a focus on military or defence. The Chinese concept of “Traditional Stratagem” or “Moulue” is much wider. The wisdom or discipline of Moulue originates from the&nbsp;Book of Changes or I-Ching. The I-Ching is the source of nearly all thoughts and philosophies in ancient China including Confucianism and Taoism. Initially the I- Ching only comprised a set of sixty-four symbols known as hexagrams without any words. The words of I-Ching are only interpretations laid down by the wisemen afterwards. I- Ching also shapes the knowledge and art in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Feng Shui, and even Martial Arts. According to the cosmology of I-Ching, the universe is composed of two polar forces known as Yin and Yang. Yin is moon, soft, woman, weak, etc while Yang is sun, hard, man, strong, etc. Yin and Yang form a dialectic wholeness and they will transform to each other in cycles.Guiguzi, a legendary figure during the period for Warring States in ancient China, is the founder of a school of thought known as&nbsp;School of Vertical Alliance and Horizontal Division&nbsp;or&nbsp;School of Diplomacy.&nbsp;Guiguzi applied the wisdom of I-Ching in developing teachings in 5 different fields: (1) military strategy, tactics in battlefields; (2) art of persuasion, used mainly in diplomacy and negotiation;(3) esoteric mathematics such as astrology, Feng Shui; (4) medicine, meditation, alchemy; and (5) stratagem, wit and wisdom for practical use (i.e. Moulue). These disciplines are not mutually exclusive and may be interrelated. Guiguzi is also known as “the Patron Saint of Stratagem”. He authored a book “Guiguzi” dealing with the art of persuasion. Most people including scholars think that Guiguzi’s teachings are all included in this book. This is totally misconceived. Most of Guiguzi’s teachings were orally transmitted and disseminated from generation to generation throughout Chinese history. In the following I will introduce two such stratagems applicable to the economic growth of China.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;One of these is his&nbsp;12 ways of changing tactics. Here is one way:-“The rabbit rolls in long and short paths”. When a rabbit rolls down, it will find short or long way, depending on circumstances. This can be applied to a person, a unit, a business or even a nation. If the trend is to fall or decline, a rabbit will find an appropriate path so that it can roll down the slope safely. The magic words for this stratagem is “smooth falling”. In Chinese cosmology, everything moves in a cycle. When it gets to the top, it will inevitably fall. Sometimes it is useless to resist. However, the smart way is to let it fall smoothly, to minimize injury and damage, and then to land safely on the ground. If the economy of China is going to fall anyway, I think the Beijing leadership will not insiston boosting growth at all costs but rather let it cool down a little, preserve some basic resources, maintain foundational infrastructure, etc. The government knows that some loss and suffering for a short period is necessary before the rising up in the near future.&nbsp;&nbsp;Another wisdom of Guiguzi is his&nbsp;72 changes of tactics. Here is one of them:-“The way to get rid of confinement.” In this stratagem, Guiguzi teaches us that we should have great vision and ambition even when we are confined by harshness and difficulty. Having such attitude and spirit is the only way to attain a bright prospect later. To be a successful person, one should preserve his ambition whether in good or bad time. The is the wisdom to overcome adversity. If China has entered a phrase of economic stagnation, I think the leadership or government will remain patient and remind people of their collective mission to restore the prosperity and brightness of China. This can be achieved by political and psychological means. In Chinese wisdom, an obstacle is not always “bad”. There is a saying, “When an old man loses a horse, who knows whether it is a stroke of good luck?”. Hard times in the economy can make people retreat and think. They can learn to adapt and even create new approaches, preparing for the next wave of economic growth.&nbsp;ConclusionWhen we talk about the macro- and global economic performance of China, it is not sufficient just to study pure economic data and modern social science. Geopolitical rivalry is also a key factor. Apart from the observation and description, it is also interesting to analyse how China will cope with the problems. In this aspect, traditional stratagem is rarely researched because even mainstream Chinese scholars do not know much about this mysterious discipline. I hope this article will serve an unintended introduction of this subject to readers. Traditional Chinese Stratagem is a human treasure that benefit people from all walks of life.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Will China continue to grow?

Donald Trump has lost no time annoying all the right people and overturning various apple carts. Whether it is foreign aid, gender policy or the World Health Organisation, the new US president has hit the ground running, breaking more taboos than any other political figure in memory. One of these taboos is negotiation with Russia. As Ralf Dekker pointed out recently in the foreign affairs committee of the Lower Chamber of the Dutch Parliament, the danger is now that Europe will double down and continue its failed Ukraine policy, which is harming Europe much more than it is harming Russia, in the mistaken belief that it can continue with the old Biden policy while Trump negotiates with Putin over Europe’s head.
