‘You can choose any colour so long as it is grey,’ seems to be the motto of contemporary European politics. As Mike Benz has explained in his numerous videos, the West decided about ten years ago that democracy is no longer about process – parties compete in elections and the best one wins – but instead about outcomes and ‘institutions’. If those institutions seem threatened (or, more precisely, the careers of those who work in them) then democracy is said to be in danger. FVD International’s director, John Laughland, was interviewed on RT this week about the political Rubik’s cube into which Emmanuel Macron has thrown France. Whichever way he twiddles the parliamentary arithmetic, he cannot find a prime minister. An impeachment procedure has been launched against him which has no chance of succeeding. But if he cannot appoint a prime minister, he may decide to resign – and then stand again for his own re-election. However often the voters vote against the incumbent political class, that political class retains its deathly grip on power.
Britain is no exception. If anything, Brexit seems to have brought about closer cross-Channel political alignment than before. Sir Keir Starmer, who himself proudly says that he prefers Davos to Westminster, is very similar to Macron: both men hate their own people. Just as Macron’s police reacted with great cruelty to the ‘yellow vests’ movement during his first term, so Starmer spat venom at those English people who protested against too much immigration after a Rwandan stabbed to death three girls coming out of a dance class. Starmer is also like Kamala Harris: both made their careers as prosecutors and Starmer certainly seems keen to bang up his political opponents now that he is in Number 10. John Laughland was interviewed about all this and more on the Johnny Vedmore show on TNT radio.

If the political class sails on unperturbed whatever happens in elections, it also does the same thing when new information emerges. German prosecutors have recently announced they want to arrest a Ukrainian for blowing up the Nord Stream gas pipelines. When the sabotage occurred, everyone said the Russians did it, including Dutch members of parliament who are now ministers. They condemned the attack then – but now? What if it was carried out by our ally, Ukraine? Their silence is deafening. FVD MP Pepijn van Houwelingen has put down a series of questions to the Dutch government to try to shed light on its double standards. Let’s see how they try to wriggle out of this one!

On The Forum and Friends this week, our video podcast, we were delighted to have Craig Murray as our guest to discuss the end of political pluralism in the West. Craig is a remarkable figure – deeply reflective and also highly energetic. It was a superb discussion.
