Thierry Baudet surprised by Geert Wilders' EU stance: “There can be no strict asylum policy without NEXIT”

During the General Political Consultations, Thierry Baudet questioned PVV leader Geert Wilders about his EU stance. Baudet wanted to know whether Wilders still wanted to leave the European Union. And if not, was this was the result of the coalition negotiations or an actual change of course by the PVV itself?

Wilders on NEXIT
In his response, Wilders, for years an outspoken supporter of NEXIT and a departure from the euro, confirmed that he had indeed changed course. Wilders said there was no question of ‘putting water into his wine’ in order to form a government coalition.  The leader of the largest governing party confirmed that the PVV itself had come to the conclusion that the Netherlands is better off as an EU member state. Thus, although Wilders had previously invariably advocated leaving the European Union and the euro, he now says that he no longer pursues these goals. This begs the question: why the change?

Baudet confronted Wilders and stressed that the Netherlands is losing its sovereignty within the EU. Not only is decision-making power on, for example, Dutch climate or immigration policy transferred to the EU as a member state, it also costs the Dutch people, as the largest net contributors to the European Union, billions we spend even to be allowed to be part of it.

Letter from Faber
The Minister for Asylum and Migration, Marjolein Faber, a member of Wilders’ PVV party, sent a letter to the European Commission earlier this week requesting a Dutch opt-out from EU asylum laws. In a response today, however, the European Commission revealed that ‘the current rules remain binding.’

FVD on EU
‘We just denounce those [refugee] treaties - and if they are difficult, we'll get out,’ Forum leader Baudet said during a radio debate earlier this year. ‘We serve the Dutch interest - and if those international treaties and organisations don't serve that interest (any longer), then we're out, it's as simple as that.’

Forum for Democracy therefore remains in favour of a NEXIT and a departure from the eurozone. To regain control of our national policies and restore democracy in the Netherlands. While Wilders seems to be giving in to the status quo, FVD continues to fight unabated for a sovereign Netherlands that determines its own future.
